Tame Impala, Metro Theatre

Front man Kevin Parker describes his band as steady flowing psychedelic groove rock that emphasizes dream-like melody. Whatever genre or sub genre you want to put them in the facts behind Tame Impala is that they are a deservedly hyped group of young men from Perth who have a musical maturity well beyond their years.

As they took to the stage at the Metro some 18 months after the first time I saw them play you could instantly notice a more confident demeanor. They didn't play their whole set from behind their long straight hair and had honed their rapport building skills with the audience. Their meandering melodies that build slowly to mind blowing climax were still there and tighter than ever, but as is the case with a lot of well rehearsed improvisation there seemed to be a little less magic. I don’t know if a couple of years of touring and the recording of their pending album Innerspeaker has taken its toll on their youthful exuberance or if professionalism has brought with it what appeared to be stale perfection. Whatever the case may be none could disagree that they were the masters of their machines and played a powerful set of extended old and new material. The notable exclusion of crowd favorite and Blue Boy cover Remember Me was somehow impressive.

As the majority of the room spilled out, content they had seen what they came there for, a faithful and significant portion of the crowd weren’t going to give up an encore without a fight. I'm from the school of thought that a crowd needs to earn an encore and Tame was going to make them work hard for it. The fact that the roadies hadn’t begun dismantling the stage was giving the dedicated hope. Finally after a long wait the boys with members of support act The Silence and special guest Craig Nicholls returned to the stage as a refreshing breeze blew through the half empty theatre. They screamed into a blistering version of The Vines, Get Free leaving those remaining with the post Tame Impala gig feeling they are accustomed to… Blown away! They left the stage with a final comment "I can't believe we just did that." I for one am glad they did.
